Tom Barrett this week welcomed a contingent of Blue Star Mothers to the Capitol building in Lansing,Rep. Barrett, R-Potterville, who serves as chair of the House Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs, is author of a bill to declare Feb. 1 of every year Blue Star Mother’s Day in Michigan.Blue Star Mothers is an organization of military mothers who gather to support their children serving overseas. The organization was founded in Flint in 1942, and they began by volunteering tirelessly throughout World War II, working in hospitals and train stations, packing care packages for soldiers and providing support for the war effort in a multitude of other ways.Today the group promotes patriotism by sending care packages and letters to members of the armed forces and veterans throughout the year.“These moms are vital in maintaining high morale amongst our men and women serving in uniform, and their hard work and dedication should be appreciated,” Rep. Barrett said. “It’s important to recognize the good these mothers do at least one day every year and thank them for the service of their sons and daughters.”Rep. Barrett recognized the contingent during an introduction on the House floor.Rep. Barrett’s legislation, House Bill 4347, has been referred to the House Committee on Government Operations.#####last_img
