Rabat – Mayor Xavier García-Albiol of Badalona said he will not allow a mosque to be built by the Moroccan government, Spanish news agency EFE reported.García-Albiol from the Popular Party (PP) reacted to reports carried by Spanish daily newspaper ABC suggesting that the Moroccan government is moving towards the construction of a large mosque in Badalona, Catalonia’s third largest municipality. The mayor said that “if someone thinks he can build this religious edifice is wrong,” adding that “he will not hesitate to act without complexes to defend his locality against anyone who tries to move forward with this initiative.” Albiol said the municipal government will present a motion on Monday, April 27th to reject “an initiative of this kind in Badalona.”The Badalona mayor is no stranger to controversy. In 2013, he faced hate-mongering charges after distributing flyers linking immigrants, especially Gypsies and Romanian nationals, to the rise in crime in his municipality.Photo Credit: Euro-Islam.info
