first_img VALDOSTA, Ga. – Argonaut softball put together a 40-16 record this season, despite some major bumps in the road throughout the year. Between injuries and position shifts across the season, West Florida continually overcame obstacles that would have stood in the way of any other team. Their postseason dreams, however, came to an end on Saturday afternoon. The Argonauts twice faced elimination on Saturday, and dodged a trip home in a 4-3 win over Albany State in the first game. The West Florida pitching staff combined to defeat the Rams, as Ashleigh Allgood (Oxford, Ala./Jefferson Davis) earned the win for a final 17-6 season record. Both Victoria Harvey (Green Cove Bay, Fla./Clay HS) and Jillian Lafrance (Calgary, Alberta/Charleston Southern) teamed up to close the game for Allgood, advancing West Florida to the South Region semi-finals.Allgood put the first run on the board with solo ride over the left center wall in the second inning, while the Rams answered the run in the bottom half of the frame. The Argos, however, quickly countered in the third as Karri Bisbee (Panama City, Fla./Gulf Coast CC) drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on an Amber Ingram (Pensacola, Fla./Catholic HS) double. With a 2-1 lead in the sixth, Allgood became the third Argonaut to hit two homeruns in a single game this season with a blast to the opposite side in right center. Crystal Thompson (Bonifay, Fla./Gulf Coast CC) then followed with a double, and Kaley Kania (Pensacola, Fla./Tate HS) entered the game to run. When Kania advanced to third on a sacrifice fly, head coach Tami Cyr called for the squeeze, and it was Lexi Mikedis (Citra, Fla./Central Florida CC) who answered that call with a successful bunt that scored Kania. Despite two runs in the bottom of the sixth from Albany State, Harvey and Lafrance teamed up in the circle to preserve the 4-3 lead for the win.Lafrance was called upon to start in the circle against Valdosta State, with both teams fighting for a spot in the South Region finals. The senior gave up just six hits to a potent VSU offense, but West Florida fell 3-0 in a season-ending loss to the Lady Blazers. In a pitching duel between Lafrance and VSU ace Margaret Carter, it was GSC East Player of the Year Alyssa Shirey who broke open a scoreless game in the top of the second. West Florida’s Danielle Kildow tried to spark the Argo offense in the third with a base hit that proved to be the only hit from either team between the second and sixth frames as the two ace pitchers battled in the circle.Valdosta State’s Morgan Johnson and Stephanie Carlson, however, each blasted solo homeruns of their own for a 3-0 edge on the Argonauts, a lead they would never overcome. Lafrance fanned five batters in the loss and was 1-for-3 from the plate, while Allgood represented the third Argo hit in the defeat. The Argos close the season in their third consecutive trip to the regional tournament, just falling short of advancing to the final game. West Florida says goodbye to six seniors with the loss, including Lafrance, a three-year starter in the circle. Two-year members Shannon Miles (Shreveport, La./Bossier Parrish CC) and Stephanie Ryan (Calgary, Alberta/Webber International) closed out their UWF careers, while Franny Bell (Navarre, Fla./Navarre HS), Dawnyele Stapleton (Navarre, Fla./Navarre HS), and Melissa Chastang (Satsuma, Ala./Satsuma HS) round out four-year stints under Coach Cyr.Game One Box ScoreGame Two Box ScorePrint Friendly Version Share UWF Softball Season Comes to an End with 1-1 Day at South Region Tournamentcenter_img UWF Seniors (Photo by UWF Sports Information) last_img
