first_img Argonaut Weekly: February 8-14 Sharecenter_img PENSACOLA, Fla. – The first pitch has been thrown in the spring season for University of West Florida Athletics, as the UWF baseball, golf, softball, and tennis teams are ready for their 2010 campaigns.  The Argonaut basketball teams are also in the stretch run, as both teams are fighting for a return to the Gulf South Conference Tournament in March.  Baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, and softball are all home this week, while the men’s golf team wraps up its first spring tournament of the season in Orlando.ARGONAUT OF THE WEEKZach CatesBaseballSenior First BasemanCates, a senior first baseman for the University of West Florida, had an outstanding week at the plate. The Mobile, Ala. native batted .429 (9-21) over a six game stretch with eight runs batted in. In the Argos’ first series of the season he went 5-12 with four runs scored and back-to-back three RBI games. Back in Pensacola over the weekend for the home opener against Rollins, Cates blasted his first career Argonaut homerun. West Florida went on to sweep Montevallo in a three game series for the first time since 2005. The offense really came alive in the series, posting 34 runs over the three game span. Game one starter Kevin Johnson picked up his first win of the season as he tossed six strong innings while striking out eight in the 12-2 win. In game two the Argos battled from a late three run deficit to pull out the come-from-behind 13-10 win. In the nightcap West Florida jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back as they cruised to a 9-2 victory.Over the weekend the Argos returned home to face Rollins College for a three game series. In game one the Argos jumped out to an early lead but would let the lead slip away as they dropped game one to the Tars 14-4. With Johnson back on the mound in game two, the Argos responded back with a 6-2 victory to even up the series at one apiece. Johnson went the distance in game two, tossing his first complete game of the season while allowing just eight hits with five strikeouts. In the rubber match between these two teams, the Argos could not get much going offensively as they were shutout 2-0 by Tars starter Tim Griffin.On the week the Argos went 4-2 and look to rebound from the series loss to Rollins with a pair of wins over Concordia-Selma this Thursday, February 11th. First pitch for Thursday’s doubleheader is slated for 1:00 p.m. CT.WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (13-9, 4-3 GSC)- 2/3 @ West Alabama: 64-69 L- 2/6 @ Alabama-Huntsville: 91-68 WAfter a tough road loss to a streaking West Alabama team on Wednesday, the Argonauts rebounded in a big way with a 91-68 win at Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday.  In Wednesday’s 64-69 loss in Livingston, Sabrina Stambouli’s potential game-tying three-pointer bounced out with three seconds left, and the Tigers held on for the win.  Dominique Boykins had a strong game for the Argonauts, scoring 16 points with seven rebounds to lead the team.  Amy Drake added 15 points and seven assists, and Stambouli scored 11 off the bench.On Saturday the Argos scored a season-high 91 points to take down Alabama-Huntsville on the road on Saturday afternoon. The Argos shot 50 percent from the field and had three players score in double-digits in the 91-68 victory, led by Drake with 23 points and five steals.  Tiffany Williams turned in an 8-11 performance from the field on her way to 19 points, while Jessie Ivey’s 3-4 mark from long range earned her 12 points. Drake and Williams teamed up for a total of 14 assists, eight and six respectively. The Argos will face a big test this week, hosting first place Valdosta State on Wednesday and West Georgia on Saturday.  Valdosta State is 13-7 and a perfect 6-0 in GSC play, while defending East Division champion West Georgia is 8-14, 1-5.MEN’S GOLF- 2/7-9 @ Golfweek Division II Spring InvitationalThe University of West Florida men’s golf team finished their first round of the 2010 spring season strong, compiling a nine over par 297 to put the team in fourth place and just six strokes off first place Lander at the Golfweek Spring Invitational Saturday. Sophomore Ryan Black came in low for the Argonauts, birdying three of his last five holes to shoot a one over par 73 and place in a tie for 10th, while junior Otto Bonning sits one stroke back in a tie for 17th place after finishing with a 74.
